Oscar Arnulfo Romero wuchs in bescheidenen Verhältnissen auf. 1977 wurde er Erzbischof von El Salvador, das zu dieser Zeit autoritär regiert wurde. Romero galt als konservativer Kirchenmann. Er entwickelte sich jedoch unter dem Eindruck der Ungerechtigkeit und Brutalität des herrschenden Regimes sehr bald zum Anwalt für die Armen und Ausgebeuteten.
Sein Einsatz für die Entrechteten kostete ihn schließlich das Leben: Am 24. März 1980 wurde Oscar A. Romero am Altar erschossen.
In den Herzen der Menschen seines Landes ist er immer noch lebendig und wird – nicht nur dort – längst wie ein Heiliger verehrt. Seine Botschaft ist heute so aktuell wie damals „Mich könnt ihr töten – aber nicht die Stimme der Gerechtigkeit“ –
Papst Franziskus hat Oscar A. Romero am 24.Mai 2015 selig gesprochen.
Die beiden Kantoren Marita Hasenmüller und Georg Hasenmüller aus Friedrichshafen komponierten das Musical „Oscar Romero – eine moderne Passion“ in 16 musikalischen Bildern. Der Text stammt vom Theologen Rainer Steib. Premiere feierte das Stück 1992 beim Katholikentag in Karlsruhe. Seither gab es zahlreiche weitere Aufführungen.
Ausführende sind:
Sängerinnen und Sänger des Jungen Chores St. Columban, Friedrichshafen zusammen mit Schauspielern.

Kuno Bucher, Saxophon/Querflöte
Egon Bucher, Bass
Harald Fuchsloch, Schlagzeug,
